Rev counter erratic

Hi, my rev counter on my 1999 2.5td has started being erratic or not working at all, having read through some posts it seems the most likely problem is a ne sensor or pulse generator, I have looked at the schematics but they don't help me a lot
Should I be able to get to it from under the drivers seat, do I have to jack it up and go from underneath, do I have to remove undertray, any pics of location or an idiots guide would be most appreciated
I'm trying to start doing things myself and am no mechanic
Thanks

It seems to vary depending on model;

early or late shape? early is drivers side just in front of fuel pump, later shapes are front of engine behind crank pulley

There are a couple of pictures here
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/115761593684? but difficult to judge exact context but may help.
These YouTube videos also show the connector on the lefthand side

Ah ha here you go he is inserting the sensor at this point during the rebuild!

Geoff is way ahead of me, but I have known a fluctuating rev counter to be a sign the alternator is on its last legs.
Not too difficult to replace from under passenger's seat.
