Anyone know what this is??

Hey Bongo Fury Crew,

Long time reader, first time poster here!

Sorry if this is a duplication of something else on here or in the wrong place but really didn't know what to search for in the first instance to establish what it is!

We've had Bailey (2.5L Diesel post-99) since July last year, got a mechanic friend who has previously had a Bongo service/maintain it which is great(MOT this month with just 1 advisory :D ) but we've come across something we don't know what it is.

Under the steering column there is a 'component' that has a dial/adjustable switch, and it dropped down while driving yesterday. It is not fully 'connected' to the fuses etc. and doesn't seem to have any negative effect on the van. Following the cable out of the 'component' and the other end it goes to a metal rod under the driver seat but again this isn't connected to anything.

He thinks it may have had a diesel heater fitted previously and was to check outside temperature but not 100% sure.

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance

Thanks,
Jamie

Just an after market add on looks to be measuring the temperature of the pipe in the third picture and then the dial in the first picture controls when the thermostat switches the electrical contacts over, you would need to follow the wires back from the socket its plugged into, unless its already been left unplugged and just left dangling under the dashboard - not uncommon to find loads of wiring from old Japanese wiring of addons that have been disconnected and then just left doing nothing!

Thanks so much Geoff.

It doesn't look to be connected to anything and the one cable goes really far under the steering column and can't really follow it.

Will likely tape it up and secure it, then leave the mechanic take a look when they have it(no doubt to look at something else)

Hi.

Yes it looks like one of these.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/200929164720 ... psQAvD_BwE
normally used to control a fan but could have been used for anything really. I remember them in use for the aftermarket electric fan conversions when cars still have them running from the engine.

I also agree it looks like its no longer in use.

Thanks Ian.

Thinking about this now, could it therefore be the switch for the scavenger fan?

The scavenger fan has its own sensor positioned under the handbrake poking into the engine compartment and feeds into the ECU.

I did notice that the scavenger fan didn’t come on after a 70 mile drive this week so not sure if it could be connected to this somehow.

It does go by the handbrake but then under driver seat

Scavenger fan should only come on if the engine compartment as a whole gets hot, normally when your in a static queue and there is no airflow, distance alone shouldn't be a reason.

Thanks Geoff.

Will ask the mechanic to take a look at it
