After your thoughts

Post by blanch80 » Fri Aug 25, 2023 3:46 pm

Hi!

We have a 2004 2l petrol automatic which we bought off a family friend that is now in need of quite a bit of work. I’ve got a quote and it’s booked in to get work done, we’ve decided to get it sorted and keep it - hopefully with a good few years pain free motoring ahead. Just not sure we’re doing the right thing and wondering what others would do.

Overall it drives great, has had a gearbox oil leak but looks like it’s been caught in time, this is what needs doing. Would you stump up the money to get it right or let it go?

Full service
Brakes - discs and pads all round and serviced
ATF pipe repair - replacement required
Over box cooling pipe replacement
Rear matrix leaking coolant - this will be bypassed in order to fix
Cam cover oil gasket and Clips for air box
Timing belt - oil seals and pipes were required
Coolant alarm
Undersealed

It would be interesting to know how many of you would keep and fix or call it a day, and what do you think we should be paying to get this work done to a high standard?

Pretty standard set of repairs to be honest, once done and a good check on all the coolant pipes you should be set for a good number of years. Make sure that undersealing is in good nick otherwise you will find that arches and cills will need work on them.

Thanks for the reply. What price do you think I’d be looking at to get all that done?

Honestly none of us can quote for this work.

In central London overheads will be very different to rural Derbyshire.
Take a torch, toilet roll, and tea bags.

a fair old whack I would say circa £800-15000...quite a bit of labour in that lot (depends who you get to do the work). For a 2004 Bongo I think that list is quite substantial.....ongoing maintenance neglected by previous owner?

Quote I’ve got is a fair bit more than that but it is going to be done by specialists, i want to make sure everything is done right and no corners cut. I think £1500 sounds a bit cheap for all that work tbh - I’d be over the moon if that’s what it was. Getting it done in the North East.

Yes to the previous owner unfortunately, seems they did the bare basics themselves, badly, but we did get it for a good price.
