Fixing Awning C Channel

Hi all,
I want to get a side awning, but don't like the idea of attaching to the gutter using figure of 8 strips. I was considering removing the 3 OEM awning hooks, and using the mounting holes to permanently attach a length of C channel.
Has anyone else done this? Any thoughts on good 'vs' bad idea?
