Bongo Fury

Hi all - another question from this mechanically inept bongo owner. We had all four brakes replaced a few months back, sometime recently we started hearing a clunk when we would apply the brakes. Had the van in last week for an MOT and asked them (same shop that did brakes) check the noise out. Mechanic told me he didn't hear anything and it passed MOT. His explanation was that it was brake pads moving in the caliper. I understand that they do have some movement, it's just that in my 20+ years of driving lots of deifferent cars/trucks/vans I've never had this happen. I popped the wheel off to see if my ludite-self could find anything. I noticed that the hub(?) had some play in it causing the studs to knock - see first vid. Second vid is the clunky noise when the brakes are applied.

Any thoughts from the collective? Thanks again.

Hi, do you have aftermarket wheels fitted to your van? if so, I would check the profile against the hub, your first vid is quite normal this won't happen if the wheel is fitted and tightened properly, on some vehicles they fit a grub screw to the disc but it is not necessary .

Don't some of the brake pads have a little additional spring clip to prevent this movement of the pad, its been noted previously if you do a search and the pads should have the little spring clips to prevent it see here in the plastic bag https://bongospares.co.uk/shop/new/brea ... reak-pads/

No In this case the pads and disc are not moving, it's the hub that is moving. This is why I asked if the correct profile road wheels are fitted, it's the road wheel that secures the disc to the hub, if the road wheel bottoms out on the hub it will have this movement.

I had similar a few years back upon backing around town + random vibrations at around 60mph, felt at the steering wheel. Very annoying, and spent hours re-balancing wheels and checking steering / suspension joints etc. Turns out the hubs don't suit the wheels exactly, so needed some Spigot.....

Try jacking up the wheel, apply the foot brake and see if that movement is still there .

I tried jacking up the wheel and with the foot brake applied there was no movement. I would assume that eliminates the wiggle shown in the first vid as being an issue. Any other thoughts? Cheers
