Starting problem

Post by bongotoffee » Sun Jun 12, 2022 10:53 am

Bongo 2.5 diesel starts when it feels like. Started first time this morning, second time not turning over at all, the AC display goes blank.
This happens most days now, when we are on our way home it won't start. After a few minutes it will start again.

Any ideas?

Hoping we can get to Stourport.

Sounds like the starter motor contactors have worn out they are a replacement item;
parts from eBay https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_nkw= ... r+Contacts
and there is a Youtube video on repair https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pnySma88gY

Be aware that if you have the cold start version which had the extra battery then the starter motor and contacts can't be replaced as they are inside the motor casing itself rather than external to the motor.

Thanks Geoff. That looks straightforward enough to try it myself.

Would this be OK? I could have it for Friday.

I imagine so provided as I say your not a Northern Japan Cold start model with the extra battery and valve in the exhaust which has the different model of starter motor, you would also have this switch on the dash the righthand side of the two switches;

Its always worthwhile cleaning the battery terminals and making sure they are tight, also the starter feed.

Good point, it could be a dodgy battery connections indeed.

I couldn't get the bolts out of the starter motor with my pathetic socket set, so settled for hitting it with a hammer. Seemed to do the trick. Not a permanent fix, I am getting a heavier duty socket set and have given the bolts a soak in WD40.
