1995/97 ECU Fault code 38

Post by BongoNoo » Sun Apr 24, 2022 7:41 pm

Good Evening.

I was a member here many years ago, and have lost/forgotten those login details, so just signed up again.

Is there anyone that can point me towards the reason for an engine ECU fault code 38? My searches have not found the code referenced.

My van is a 1997 diesel 4wd AFT. Originally an auto, but converted to manual with a 1995 donor van. Engine is original 1997, everything else needed to convert from 1995, Including engine wiring loom and ECU. Winter pack solenoids and valve removed at time of conversion. Van had no codes before conversion. Currently driving without issue, and has been for last 2 years. Apart from the flashing glow plug light indicating the fault. I assumed its the winter pack solenoid removal, but without knowing what code 38 refers to, not sure.

Had anyone seen ECU fault code 38 before?

Thank you.

Have you tried a search on the forum first as it's a known fault!

Yes indeed. I have seen the references to code 38 incorrectly as an 02 sensor fault (P0038) as it's not a petrol as per that linked post. So I am still assuming the code is due to the removed exhaust valve solenoid. What I'm struggling with is that the ECU is from a van that did not have a winter pack fitted, and its loom has no connector for it, so why is the ECU showing a code for this solenoid? I did once read a post a few years back about which wire/ecu pin needed to be connected (12v or earth or resistor) to tell the ecu the solenoid was still there, but can't find it now. Maybe on another forum. I'll try looking for a pin diagram for the manual gearbox ECU.

Well the solenoid is on the B2-09 connector top right and connects to the ECU on the 3Y pin on an Automatic, or pin 1O on a Manual (B1-11 connector) the loom colour is Red in either case, it provides an earth when its needed to operate, but it can sense if the solenoid is present or not by sensing +12v on that pin when not operated.
