Scary! Starting Issues and Smoke from Starter!!

Sorry this is a bit long. But whole mini-story to telll...

Flew down to Devon (from Leicester) last weekend, no problems, stopped at Tesco for supplies, jumped back in, turned the key and... nothing.

No click, nothing, but the cooling fans are now on permanently!?!? Even though she's no longer hot. Also noticed the battery is smaller than standard.

My mate eventually turned up with a mallet, couple of taps on the starter solenoid and boom! Starts-up no problem.

Couple of small trips with no issues, then after a night under the stars she does it again. Got a jump-start (I assumed the small battery plus fans sticking on were the issue) and off we go once again.

Stopped at services because I needed the fuel. When I went to start her she turned over. Really, really slowly.. but eventually started.

So today, new battery fitted and, you guessed it... nothing. Tried gently tapping the starter as before. Promising noises followed by SMOKE from the starter

So where would you start folks? Lol. New solenoid? New starter? Both? Plus new temp sensor? So. Many. Problems. All at once.

Sorry to hear of your problems. :(

The solenoid contacts can be bought from e bay for a very few £££, I'd start there, and probably replace the battery.

This company have always been good:

Maybe faulty starter, drawing to many amps.
Are you petrol or diesel, there are 2 different starters for diesels, winter pack and non winter pack models.

Sounds like it could be the 12V feed on the starter motor has a slack /faulty connection .

Ah, sorry it's a 2.5 Diesel.

And thanks folks. Somewhere to start at least. Cheers.
