Our Climate and Oil (V6 2002)

From what I have learnt when it comes to climate there are factors to take into consideration that don't seem to be in the Bongo community for our engines. We live in a different temperate zone compared to Japan. Japan can get VERY cold and VERY hot. I used to live in Hong Kong and it is way further north from there.
I presume that is why there is a lever (sometimes automatic) that redirects the air from the engine bay to internal heating or from the front intake depending on the season.
Surely OIL is also one of these factors. I've put 0w-40 (FS) in because it stays at it's viscosity down to -15c. It doesn't get any thicker until after that point.
Any opinions?
Oh and as a side note I've learnt: DO NOT PUT IN D FOR TRANSMISSION OIL CHECK!! UP TO OP TEMP AND IN PARK.. THESE SYSTEMS ARE SEALED FOR A REASON! SO UNLESS THERE IS A PROBLEM WE SHOULDN'T BE MESSING WITH THEM.
