E10 Petrol: Have You Used It?

Post by Ian » Fri Aug 20, 2021 10:46 am

Please only take part in this poll of you have used E10 petrol and own either a V6 or a pre-2002 2 litre (up to chassis numbers SGEW-503208 or SGE3-400091). You can choose a maximum of 4 options.

There's a discussion about E10 fuel at viewtopic.php?f=12&t=78047

I see from FB that some people when querying with a garage that despite the labels having been put on that the fuel hasn't actually changed yet ...... so if we have used it and not noticed any change is it because it hasn't actually changed yet! ??????

I doubt that very much, it is totally illegal to put false information on a forecourt fuel pump (EMC) especially of this nature, doing so could se the proprietor losing there Petroleum License and a very hefty fine even a Custodial sentence .

I know of a garage in Devon with the labels on but still E5 in the tank because the person I was with purchased super to be E5, and they told her when she was paying that the labels were on the pump nozzle 🙄 but its still E5.
I will ask my friend at TS

Yip you ask your friend at Trading Standards , I have been involved with F/stn & S/stations and TS way back when it was Weights & Measures. Contact them and your friend should pass on the information including the name of the garage .

I was thinking I should have said weights and measures officer but TS is easier 🤣 but I haven’t seen her this week.
Today the person was told in that esso station that its up to 10% when talking to them about E10 so I guess E5 5% would be classed as up to 10% #-o but as they were handing out leaflets I guess they have changed over.

I tried £76 of E10 in my V6. Slight misfire, stuttering when pulling away. Not bad enough to make it cut out. But noticeable loss of performance. Now refilled with E5 Super. Performance back to normal. No misfire.

My V6 experience during September, taking my fuel economy as 7.7 km/l (ie 500km on a 67l tank)
  • 6th: set off with tank ~full of E5. Added 37.7l of E10 at Shrewsbury, so estimate now 7.8% ethanol**. 2 days touring with no issues.
  • 9th: added 65.2l of E10, est. now E9.9%. Crawling in Hereford jams, now ?knocking badly at <2000 revs. 222km home, so est. 38l left
  • 14th: added 9.5l E5 locally, to est. 36.3l of "E9.9" remaining, intending to dilute the ethanol to 8.9%ish. Knocks now only when idling.
  • 28th: with needle on ~1/4 tank est.10l, added 18l of E5 plus 36l of E10, giving E8.3% ish. Now barely knocks, eg 2-3/minute idling only.
Given those trials, going forward I intend to try running on 2:1 E10:E5, being about 8.3% ethanol (I'm a bit fuel price-sensitve  )
Plus Wynn's Specialist E10 Protector to protect my seals, plus probably a little Redex Lead Replacement for any knocking.

I'd very much appreciate any comments/critique of my approach, including "this is unwise/daft", "false economy", "knocking is damaging" etc.

** Adding y litres of "Eb" ie b% ethanol (where b=5 or 10%) to x litres of "Ea" (where 5<a<10%), your NEW % ethanol dilution = (xa + yb)/(x+y)

Just to say I am NOT using "Redex Lead Replacement", having read on the label but NOT online "Do not use with Catalytic Converters" =D>

Instead, I'm adding Millers Petrol Power Ecomax multi-shot, alongside the Wynn's E10 Protector, adding both into each tank of 2:1 E10 to E5 Super Unleaded.

The Millers seems to have taken care of the occasional remaining misfire while idling. Just hope the Wynn's has got my seals.
Performance & economy are back as they were on E5, good and thirsty respectively.

I’ve really not noticed any difference in performance ( well not sure if performance is the right word ) in my 2.0 ltr. As for MPG I don’t calculate it - it’s just flipping expensive.

Not noticed any difference performance wise it doesn't have any; no definitive accuracy but recent urban and a trip to coast giving me circa 28mpg.....definitely feeling the price rises if using the Bongo for trips out. Bet the V6 owners are feeling it........

They all drink the fuel, but I’ll forgive it as I love driving the Bongo, it’s my daily runner so the E10 doesn’t hang around in the tank that long.
