Smell and residue under passenger side block

Hi Bongo experts,

I'm hoping you can help me diagnose a possible problem (that the garage didn't pick up on a few weeks back).

Driving the Bongo, there is a strong smell that my other half described as "meaty". This has coincided with the orange ABS light coming on intermittently, and for sustained periods. When we checked under the passenger seat, there was noticeable residue around the right side of the block.

The engine also seemed to take a long time to cool.

We topped up the oil, but are still concerned about this.

If you look at the attached image, you can see the residue on the right hand side.

Anyone recognise the issue?

Thanks!

Paul

Not a lot different from my old engine;

Similar markings from oil seeping out from under the cam covers, which are only lightly done up normally.
Might want check that there isn't oil seeping into the spark plug wells where it can damage the leads and covers etc.

As to the smell, not sure unlikely to involve the ABS light, that tends to indicate faulty wheel sensors or connections, especially if the light comes on a morning where there is a lot of dew!

Be interesting to see what the "meaty" smell is. Wonder could it be hot oil burning on the engine block a little.

You could check if the alternator is overcharging. We have seen them flicker the ABS light when it spikes. Or the ABS sensor could be beginning to fail.
