Bongo Fury

Last week I changed from Triple QX 5W 40 fully synth (nice for the winter not that I do many cold starts really) to Brit Oil Optima 10w/40 (£21.00 for 10L) At least to the ear I can discern zero difference sounds smooth running to me after a 80 mile round trip. I am quite sure with the ancient Bongo diesel engine that literally any cheap stuff at the suggested 10w/40 (diesel) is totally fine as long as it says it is ok for diesels.

These days I just buy the cheapest semi synth/fully synth oil I can and it seems fine for 6-9 months it is in there with <4000 miles a year. These days you can find 10L oil for £29.00 fairly easily on ebay.

Perfectly happy to use the cheaper stuff these days, it is highly likely all over spec for the Bongo. I think the critical thing is regular changes. Engine seems happy enough these days. (thankfully)

Still using Bosch oil filters here but they have become rather pricey £13.00 a pop.. anyone else have any decent price oil filter suggestions ?

You could get your self a Lubricheck oil tester, that will tell you when you need to change oil , it will let you know if your cheep oil is ok.

Hi- what model have you got? We have a V6 and trying to work out which oil I should be looking at for this...any ideas?

thanks for that - interpreting that this suggests two grades of oil but no difference what so ever in the rational....makes it easier I guess!

Diesel 2.5L here... (not sure about petrol variants requirements, sorry)

Not sure if last reply was to me or not.. I go 5w40 winter (bit thinner for cold starts) and 10w40 summer (5w40 is usually fully synth I get that if it is on offer otherwise stay I would happily stay 10w40.)

Thanks Rita for the lubrimeter suggestion. I change it every 9months approx and that suits me and the Bongo. Sounds useful
but I am not sure if I need one personally. (I think it would have to be filled with Mazola to not be able to manage the low miles I do - though do a fair amount of shorter journeys these days when not locked down so change it regular.)

Bit odd it says either 5w30 to 10w30 on Geoff's Mazda specs but most places for Bongo sell 10W40 for the diesel.
