Cooling Fan Always On

Just had my Bongo three weeks now and the cooling fan is always on from when I first turn the key.

I'm assuming that either someone has bypassed a sensor or the sensor is faulty. Any advice on where to start with this? Where is the sensor on the engine?

Cheers,

Nige

The tc sensor is on the rear O/S of the cylinder head Item No 18-840c, if you need one they can be purchase for about £10.00.

As a matter of interest was this fault present when you purchased the vehicle??

Yes it was present. I didn't really think too much of it as I've never owned something like this before. It was only when the mechanic pointed it out that I kicked myself for not looking into it more.

I hope it is just a malfunction sensor , if it has signs of melting the head has probably suffered a roasting. I keep telling peeps to have these old vehicles examined by a professional mechanic , a wrong one can be a vey expensive nightmare.

This is not directed to yourself but just as a reminder to potential buyers.

Take care.

You say always on, or are they on-off, is the Aircon switched on, as the fans are used when the Aircon is operated.

It's not the aircon. The angled fan in front of the engine and the radiator one. I'm out at the moment but I'll have a lcloser ook when I get home.

Hopefully it's the sensor.

Thanks Teenmal,

I've found the sensor which looks fine with no heat damage and traced it to a relay under the dash, then to a couple of wires under the bonnet. One goes to earth and the other to a set of what I think (but could be wrong) are 6 relays deep down to the left of the radiators. It's going to the one toward the back and I think it's going to the centre one.

Can you shed light on if I'm in the correct place and that these don't do something entirely different?

Cheers.

hi when you say the ECT "looks fine" have you actuality physically tested it.

No I haven't tested it because I assume that I'd need to take it out and drop it in hot water. I'm not in a position to drain the water out.

Or am I totally wrong on this?

I know it's simply a switch. I guess I could wait for the engine to cool and test between the connectors?

Think this solves it.

After waiting for the engine to cool down, I have a big fat 0 ohms between the connectors of the sensor.

Thanks all.

The scavenger fan in front of the engine, is to cool the engine housing and hence its sensor is under the handbrake, it feeds the ECU which controls the relay B7-04
