Pump seals - missing shims

Hi all.

I was going to resurrect this thread by dandywarhol but it's locked, my query however is on the same subject.

https://www.igmaynard.co.uk/bongo/forum ... 85#p129685

I had the 2 pump side seals replaced due to fuel weeping from under the side domed cover. Ever since, the engine's been 'pinking' like mad, classic detonation/too much advance on the injection timing I'm sure, although there is no loss of power.

Just to add, it was done with the pump in situ.

When I asked the person who did the job if the shims went back correctly, he said "what shims?". I believe he has taken off the domed cover and all the contents have dropped out and been replaced either incorrectly or minus the shims, the engine was running sweet before all this was done.

Is there a schematic of the pump anywhere? Its a Bosch VF44 and I've searched the net to no avail. I need to remove the domed cover and ensure the parts were refitted correctly although I have no idea where the shims reside etc.

Any advice would be gratefully received, I don't want to cause engine damage if the timing is over advanced, I've seen what this can do on a petrol engine, I assume a diesel would be the same.

Thanks.

Thanks for the reply, the schematics appear to be the FBW pump, mine is a '96 model and I don't see the domed cover (opposite to engine side of pump) there.

I'm particularly keen to know which way round the piston is fitted before the cover is replaced as it has one side longer than the other and I think this may also have a bearing on my problem.

That's the pump, thank you. I've pm'd maxheadroom to ask for a pdf copy of the schematic as per the thread.

There are usually shims on the front and rear of the double spring , how many depends on how the pump was calibrated, if the piston has a hydraulic groove it goes to the inside of the pump (head first).

Take care

Out of curiosity what numbers on that diagram are the seals that go when they start to leak ?
