Bongo Fury

Hi Folks
My fuel gauge is beginning to act up - reading half full when actually a full tank etc. I read that the problem is probably a poor earth connection at the sender unit sitting on top of the fuel tank and accessible via a little inspection hatch on the floor of the vehicle...

Armed with this information, I strode confidently to the vehicle half an hour ago. I'd hoped to find the inspection hatch was accessible without having to move the very well fitted carpet - I think I've seen little flaps on carpets in other vehicles with the inspection hatch snugly underneath...

So, do I need to take up/roll back the floor carpet? It seems to be held in place by the vehicles inner side panels. Will I need to loosen these panels to release the carpet - or have I totally misread the location of the hatch. I don't want to spend hours loosening carpets, panels and sanity if the hatch is located elsewhere or is easily accessed in a different way.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Pat exactly the same has happened to my fuel guage and as I have a removable conversion in mine ,I am eagerly looking forward to replies to your post so that like you I will not be pulling bits apart that I do not need to to get to the sender. Sorry this is of no help to you at all, but I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone with this problem. GINGE

Just had my sender unit fixed.

Being lazy / technically incapable, I found out what was wrong by searching the website, then printed out the pages for my mechanic.

I gave him a page from BongoFury which DOES say to take back the carpet and that the flap is behind the middle set of seats, and that taking back the carpet isn't as hard as it looks. See August 11th posting by David Edwards.

My mechanic writes a fairly comprehensive set of notes on what he has done, and for that it says "Check for fuel gauge faults - check wiring to tank - good. Clean all connections".

Clearly he didn't need to drill any new ground fixings, just cleaning everything up was enough to get it all working again. As I hadn't told him how much petrol was in it, he didn't even know he HAD fixed it until I told him.

So assuming he followed the website instructions, then he will have taken up the carpet...

Sorry guys my fuel gauge packed up and I had to do the earth and I am afraid you do have to roll back the carpet get to the inspection hatch.When refiting the carpet I found it useful to have a paint scraper to help feed the carpet back under the trim.

Hi Guys, Many thanks for the replies. I've just got back from a day in Hull so haven't had a chance to look at the site until now. I'll be rolling back the carpet on Sunday. I can see exactly where and why I need a paint scraper!
