Bongo Fury

Hi all

We (two adults, two kids under 10) got our Bongo in the summer, and already love it.

Now looking at escaping for half term. The weather remains mild, which helps, but we've yet to face anything that isn't the height of summer. What are your top tips for bonging when the weather (and the ground) gets colder and wetter..?

You shouldn't need the very best next week, but really good sleeping bags, then find a site with a good pub nearby.

Ideally allows youngsters and does good food.

I'd also check the forecast and be prepared to pack up if the weather is dire.

That said, we've had many happy out of season holidays.

Following our very damp recent weekend in the Peak District we have added a few more items to take with us when Autumn/Winter camping.

1. Rubber door mats. At least 2 should be placed on the ground by the sliding door. This gives us a little bit of dry land in the mud.
2. Cheap flip flops. When it's muddy you don't want to struggle in to your everyday shoes/boots just to go outside for a few minutes.
3. Hat. Make sure this is not left at home (like I did).

We have a container that we keep under the van for wet or muddy shoes (we don't have an awning yet!) - take your shoes off when you get in the van so the mud doesn't make it's way in to the clean area and stick the lid back on and slide it under. Has saved mud getting into the van a few times and we haven't encountered any show thieves yet...

And lots of cosy socks - always keep the feet warm!

We have a hookup cable now, so hopefully can use an oil-filled radiator if we need it. We have an awning or our alternative of canopy-plus-popup tent - might go for the latter on a separate groundsheet to keep things dry and in theory only have one damp thing to deal with later. Think we'll struggle to keep luggage indoors in the cab when sleeping as the kids' car seats take up a lot of space.

Take gloves - but don't expect the kids to wear them

Hope you enjoyed your half-term camp. My top tip - book a hard standing pitch! Also awning to use for shoe/ boot storage and drying space, plus rock pegs and club hammer for the hard standing, storm tie-down straps in case the wind gets up and a decent electric heater to run off the mains.
