Bongo Fury

We have just got back from a great week in Devon. I have a 96, 2.5 Turbo Diesel Bongo. Only had it since April and I'm new to all this and diesel too. Anyway there is a smell of burning when she has been going uphill in low gear or having to labour like this for some time. Oil is at the right level, tyre pressures are fine, coolant level is fine and there is no indication of over heating. Is it just an old engine smelling or should I get it checked out? All was serviced in April and the garage really looked after all. I haven't really had any problems as such.

Ideas anyone?

Has it been waxoyled or under sealed? I found when mine had been done that it smelt after long hills, it just seemed to be the under seal getting warm near the exhaust etc.

when labouring the valve stem seals will pass oil into the rocker vent or the rings will let oil into the crank case vent, this vent is connected to the air inlet pipe, this oil vapour is then put through the turbo /intercooler then into the inlet manifold before being burnt. if your pipework is full or the intercooler is laden with oil it can leak out and stink when it goes onto hot stuff.
if it improves when you put the front heater on recirc its leaking out of the front end somewhere, if it improves when you check the heater base seals then its the engine area.
you may need to do the valve stem seals, or like i did, divert the crank/rocker recirc pipe to atmosphere so it doesnt put all the oily vapour into the engine to burn. it would help if you clean out all the air inlet/intercooler pipe work as they have been known to fill the intercooler with oil. the black gunk can usually be seen leaking from the last elbow at the inlet manifold.
