Tail gate lights
Hi.
One of my tailgate lights has gone (nearside "red").
I undid the two bolt heads just inside the door, but clearly there is more to it than that.
Please tell me I don't have to take off the internal panel and get covered in the gunky sealant on the weather proofing sheet again.
Is it worth putting a LED in? I think I read somewhere that LEDs upset the Waeco MS50 cruise control due to less current draw?
Thanks

Re: Tail gate lights
On my old type with the bolts out you slide the light unit horizontaly away from the vehicle, sideways, if you're with me.
Re: Tail gate lights
Unfortunately, on the new shape Bongos it looks like you have to take the door panel off to get at the bulbs in the rear door. Rather a faff!
If I'd known I would have put LEDs in when I had it all apart to fit the reversing camera. You live and learn.

'Improvements'.
Are there bulbs in the other lights as well, or just the tailgate?
Only idle interest.

Re: Tail gate lights
There's bulbs everywhere!
The usual suite in the side clusters plus stop/side lights in the tailgate door. Also 2 blue tinged bulbs in the tailgate that I assume are reversing lights.
I also have a mysterious extra switch in the cab with a red LED in it which comes on when switched. Goodness knows what that does. I thought it might be for front or rear fogs, but nothing comes on.

Re: Tail gate lights
Do be careful if you install LED's. Test everything, even if there's no apparent connection. I found replacing the plate lights with LED caused the front fogs to cease working and LEDs in the brakes caused the ABS warning light to flash. I've reverted to filament bulbs everywhere except reversing lights.
Re: Tail gate lights
Yes, I'd heard stories of strange effects after fitting LEDs. Thanks for confirming. I think I'll steer clear as well then.
Rather daft of Mazda making the rear door lights such a mission on the later models.

this could be a variation on the Klingon cloaking device fitted to all models with silent silver or Indigo paint, mitchelln wrote:There's bulbs everywhere!

Funny you should say that - there was a weird shimmer when I clicked the switch

Re: Tail gate lights
I have one on my 2.0L.
It is actually a shape shifter switch.
I turned mine on and like you thought nothing happened.
You can imagine my shock when I checked the rear view mirror and there was a Bald Eagle starring back at me.

Re: Tail gate lights
When the rear light bulb went on my 2002 bongo I got it changed at a local garage. The poor mechanic had quite a job and cut a finger in the process. £10 well spent.
