The clutches in my old gearbox burnt out, so I purchased a known good one with 6 months warranty from a Japanese breaker, I installed it with my torque converter, cleaned filter and replaced fluid with new, but I got no drive what so ever, have I done something wrong wondering if it's something to do with the torque converter

did you check the oil level after fitting with the engine running, if you dip it with the engine not running all the gearbox oil is still in the sump and not necessarily in the torque converter and gearbox and oil cooler pipework.
just an idea but did it come with a matching ecu, not sure if they are matched but i know there seems to a lot of different gearbox serial numbers.

I did check the fluid levels and were spot on, have not changed transmission ecu's did not realise you had to, just wondering if there is a special way of fitting a torque converter to one of these, eg do you have to pre fill the converter? Does it just slot in?

Did you unbolt the torque converter from the flex plate and remove it with the box or did you leave your old converter attached to the plate?

Yes unbolted and removed with the box then bolted torque converter back up and then slotted gearbox back on

Then you have quite possibly smashed the pump when fitting it. The converter must ALWAYS be fully installed into the gearbox BEFORE fitting to the engine. A quick measure to ensure the converter is sitting deeper than the flexplate on the engine is proud will confirm it is fully home.
A quick check is to dip the oil without the engine running & note the level, start the engine & dip it again. The level should have dropped considerably. If it hasn't then the pump & possibly coverter is goosed I'm afraid.

This is good info, thanks Alacrity. Did you (wrightcustomvans) ever get around to fixing this or figuring it out?
Looking at new gearboxes here as our van not getting up through the gears, getting no fault codes. There's a thread about it already (
