Bongo Fury

Hi,

I am touching up/ covering the rust on my 1997 Bongo sills and lower sections. The van is a two tone, so there is a nice low line that I can work to and this will deal with the worst bits. I am going to use the Rustoleum Combicolour roller technique, as described over on the VW T5 forum.

My van is a paint code 17R, which consists of TOP HALF: Indigo Blue 12N and LOWER HALF: Silent Silver 4Z.

What I need to know is does anyone have an idea of an RAL code for Silent Silver? Or do I just need to guess from the colour chart and hope for the best?

Wouldn't mind but I'd spent ages masking the van up in anticipation of getting some paint on this afternoon. Doh.

Back to the drawing board...

Really annoying, but I'd remove the tape before it sets and start again when you have the paint.

Aye. Tape removed. Have spoken to the paint shop experts (rawlins) and am now in search of an RAL fan chart to try and match a bit more successfully.

More successful day yesterday

Second paint choice is much more similar to the Silent Silver. It's not an exact match by any means but not enough of an issue to cause my OCD tendencies to freak out! The paint is metallic this time and has a lovely sparkle in the sunshine, making the Bongo bus even more 'disco' than before

I hesitated a bit at the start as it wasn't an exact match but eventually pressed on. Glad I did so far.

Needs more coats, as you can see the roller marks just now. Will post pics once completed.

PS went for RAL code 9022 Rustoleum Combicolour in the end.

Useful too and thanks. Ive been hammeriting and just mixing silver with black to get close, and green with black for green section (bottom of tailgate). Might try this paint instead if it has similar or better properties.

Have you identified an alternative for Indigo Blue 12N?

No. Not yet. Pretty much all the rust bits on my van are in the lower section. I have a couple of patches on the tailgate but have bought an aerosol of 12N from the shop to do those.

My problem is not rust but the top lacquer is going in places the bonnet is worst with oxidised faded top coat.
