Dye the carpet?

Now that the mechanical issues are sorted (for the minute) and I've touched up the rust (for the minute), I'm starting to think about the next non-critical job.

Last year I fitted a ply floor and altro. This got rid of most of the grubby looking grey carpet.

However I still have a bit left in the front.

I've seen a Bongo with the carpet dyed black (Think it was Dennis' from New Dawn). I fancy doing the same with mine.

Any recommendations on a product to do it with? I've found a few on the internet but was after some personal experience if possible.

Have a look at Doones posts. He did a dye job on his pick up conversion. I beleive he states the name of the product.

Thanks for the links, I've ordered some midnight black dye.

Will give it a go, think it should make a big improvement.

Keep us posted on how it works out.I have a decent set but they are badly discoloured from rubber matting. Would be easier to dye them than replace so I would be interested in how it turns out.Where did you buy it ?

Bought from ebay. Use the search term "autosmart midnight black carpet dye" to find the make that was recommended in the link above. I also bought a standard spray bottle for £1 from B&M.

Will post pictures on this thread as I go along. It will only be the two carpets under the front seats and the front foot well carpets.

I don't expect it to arrive until too late to do it this Easter holiday, but as it doesn't look to be a massive job so hopefully will get it started on a weekend. I already have the drivers underseat carpet out ready to make a start.

The dye arrived today so I made a start.

Hoovered the carpet, then used cleaned the carpet, then hoovered it again.

Here is a picture of the underseat mats.

The grey one is uncleaned as I'd just removed it. The black one is after one coat of dye.

I'm a bit further on now, the two under seat carpets are done with one coat and look good. The footwell carpet though has had two coats and still looks greyer than the other carpets. It doesn't seem to take the dye as well on the shorter pile.

Is it like a paint or a liquid dye?

Is the softness of the pile affected at all?

I've been waiting to answer as it hadn't fully dried.

I don't think the softness has altered, if it has it isn't anything drastic.

Still not 100% happy with the footwell carpets. The main carpet dies really easily but the short pile (more worn) carpet in the footwell is dark grey rather than black. So it looks lighter. I've used 3 times as much on the footwell, each coat has made it a bit darker but the main carpet was much quicker.I have black mats which go over most of the footwell carpet so I'm not too worried and it was the under seat carpet that was grubby and noticeable.
