Seats - need headrests on back row if possible

Hi all,

I'm a soon to be Bongo owner (exciting) and I have a question about seats.

Please forgive me if this is a ridiculous question, I don't have the Bongo yet so can't poke around inside and see what is possible.

I have 5 children, so I need to retain the original seating for now. The van I'm getting has the split seating right at the back and the short rails for the middle bench.

Ideally I'd like to find some seats for the back that have headrests as this will feel safer for the older children at the back. If I got a middle seat from a breaker and some long runners, would this work? Or am I just making up nonsense? Is there even anywhere for long runners to attach to if the van doesn't already have them? Would the middle seat fit in the back? How would this affect the bed area when everything was folded down?

I'm not planning on getting any kind of conversion yet so not concerned with losing boot space etc. I have a hundred plans for the Bongo but would like to get safety stuff sorted first. Thanks so much for any advice.

Well I do know for sure that the long rails will fit and that the fittings are there under the carpet but you may have to cut the carpet to accommodate them then I would think you would just need the rear bench seat then. I don't know if they have headrests though a quick look on eBay would help on that one.
You may have to cut off the turrets on the wheel arches to allow it to slide. Mine is in bits at the moment so that's about as far as I can say.
Usually seats are available from converters .
Good luck I am sure you will be pleased with the Bongo.
P.S. If you do go down that route make sure the suppliers give you the bolts and plastic covers for the rails. I got mine from Bongo spares but shop around I could have got them cheaper I think.

Hi, and welcome aboard.

The long rails should fit, you will need to modify the carpet.

I can't see why you couldn't fit an extra middle seat but bear in mind these are seriuosly heavy, just keep an eye on gross and rear axle weights.

Try breakers or convertors for the parts.

I'm sure i read an article on how to fit headrests to split rear seats (bit of basic welding involved)(Bongo Fury factsheets maybe?). Or you could do what i did which is source a couple of spare Bongo headrests, buy some suitable tubing to slide them into, then some L brackets for shelving and some plywood, and make up something what works (very well in my case) a bit like the accessory headrests you could buy in the 70s, by slipping over the seats. Some amongst very old posts i describe how i did it.

Edit: this thread has a post where you can see the headrests and the tail locker they help secure (as a bonus)

Mike, you are correct. It's in the fact sheets section members area of the main website and it's called "Headrests".

Having the split rear seats is a great bonus as it increases the versatility of the Bongo.

If you change them then you will regret it...

I would suggest that you get rid of some of the children and keep the seats...

Seriously though... good luck if you can keep the seats as they are as they do make the van more versatile for things other then carrying people.... =D>

Oh.and welcome to the Bongo asylum..... =D>

Thanks for the information. I think I'll leave the split seats for now and tell the kids to brace their necks or something.

I'll get my membership sorted tomorrow and head over to those factsheets. Thanks for that info mike.

I bought my Bongo today, so I'm still excited... Or possibly it's adrenaline due to the winds!

I'll be posting some photos soon. Expect plenty of 'what is this?' photos, and then a few 'Look what I did!' ones.

Congratulations. I love the split seats. V quick and light to completely remove too should the need arise.

You could try New Dawn Conversions as Dennis does the swivel seats and converts Bongos...he is a very talented guy and I am sure he will find a way of doing it... :)

The extra boot space will come in handy as Ikea is my favourite place and we're moving house soon!
