Is this related to the cold start device found on Northern Bongos?
If yes, then would its electrical disconnection flag up a fault code?
Is the cigar shaped object near it also part of that setup?

its the solenoid swith that operates the cold start valve on the exhaust.
the steel pipe on the left is the supply of vac from the pump, and the thick rubber pipe going out of the bottom of the pic is the vac supply to the actual valve itself on the exhaust. the rest in between is an an electrical switch to switch the vac supply on/off. there is no position sensor on it to send a message to the ecu to flag a fault so its ok to remove. just blank off the steel pipe, or where it comes from, so you still have vac to the cold start solenoids and egr valve.

i think that is a resistor of some sort, im not sure what it resists though

. i think geoff has referred to it in the past, but cannot remember the details.
ah here it is 18-831 on here. click on the number on the drawing, it will describe and highlight it in the left margin.

Yes thats the kiddy.
It may be related to the cold start. I will leave it in the circuit and relocate it.
Thanks

Its a resistor, yes it drives one of the solenoids in the AT box, precise function unknown as its not mentioned in any of the manuals other than the wiring manuals as a "dropper resistor" which simply means it drops the voltage a bit to that solenoid, its B2-20 below for the diesel ;

Thats interesting, I wonder why its needed.

Given two outputs driving that particular solenoid I assume that - one direct the other thru the resistor - the solenoid has two steps a sort of semi pulled in position and a fully pulled in position.

My thoughts exactly!
I meant to ask James the Gearbox today but it totally slipped my mind.
That happens a lot lately.
