Insuring a converted Bongo
Insuring a converted Bongo
Hi, I'm close to buying my first Bongo - going to view it on Saturday (thanks for all of your advice so far!).
I've just run a search on compare the market to get an understanding of the cost to insure it. Do i need to let an insurance company know that it's been converted into a camper? There was no option on compare the market to do this.
If I need specialist insurance, can anyone offer any advice on companies to contact for a quote?
Thanks,
Bren

YES! Any modifications need to be supplied to the insurance firm, if its a camper it may also be much cheaper to insure especially thru the Camping clubs! Try the C&CC usually about £200 ish for a registered campervan http://www.campingandcaravanningclub.co ... insurance/

Thanks, Geoff. Very much appreciated
Re: Insuring a converted Bongo
There are many and various companies to try, as always! I have heard that the C&C Club is very good but, just to give you another option, try Lifesure. I've found them excellent and will mirror any NCD you may already have on or from another vehicle..
I also learnt the other day that even if you haven't had a vehicle for up to two years, your NCD still applies, is still valid and can be used on a 'new' vehicle

Re: Insuring a converted Bongo
Had no trouble insuring our converted bongo with existing car insurer.. They matched anything specialist could after long tc could not sort anything on line through go compare !! We are newbies .. Maisy only arrived in May and we adore her .. Think the feelings mutual .. Off to Ireland next week for 3 weeks can't wait !!

Thanks all, for the great advice. Viewing the Bongo on sat, if all goes well I'll hopefully purchase it. Can't wait to join the Bongo community!!
Re: Insuring a converted Bongo
If it is converted and that conversion meets the DVLA criteria for "motorcaravan" body type get the V5 amended to show the correct body type.
Some insurers require the body type to be shown as "motorcaravan" in the V5 before they will insure it as a "motorcaravan" which is almost always cheaper than as an MPV.

Re: Insuring a converted Bongo
Without knowing where you live where the Bongo is parked overnight (garage/Drive/Road/carpark??) your age, your driving record, your NCB etc. etc. etc. that question is impossible to answer.
If you are 21 live in central London, have no NCB and park it on the road it is brilliant.
If you are 50+ have 10+ years NCB and store it in a locked garage in Central Lincolnshire it probably isn't that good.
For instance - I am with Lifesure, 50+, live in Cambridgeshire, it is parked overnight on private land, I have 10+ years NCB and it is insured as a "motorcaravan" and that is what the V5 says - I pay about £200 with 4 drivers all over 30 with full NCB.
PS if it is unconverted it will cost more to insure than a converted one as converted ones can be insured on a "motorcaravan" policy which is much cheaper.

Thanks for your reply Scanner. I like the idea of doing a small conversion ourselves. What is the minimum we can do to meet the DLV criteria for an MPV to be classed as a camper

I can add nothing to that mine was registered as a motorcaravan when I bought it.
