How does the AFT actually work?

I've been doing some greasing and maintenance on the AFT.

What I'm trying to work out is how the motors actually elevate the roof. I noticed that the motors on each side are positioned in opposite directions in a "push and pull" set up. Can anyone confirm what the mechanism is? I am assuming it is a system of wires travelling within metal tubes?

People have talked about lubricating the motor spindle, but I can't see how to access this. Also, can the wires (if they exist) be lubricated?

There are two Teleflex cables these are flexible push-pull rods. These are driven by BOTH motors each in an opposite direction - this keeps both sides in sync with each other. The rods are driven by the gear 69-991 gear in the diagram below, one cable to each side of the gear in rack-pinion style.

Hi

Thanks for the replies. I thought it was a cable system.

The question now is:

1) how do you access the gear to lubricate
2) can you also lubricate the cables?

Only way I've seen to lubricate the cables is by removing the motors, there is a good fact sheet sheet on removing and refurbishing the motors.
Nothing in the Users manual, other than grease the bearings of the rollers which run along the tracks, and polish the gas struts when exposed (don't lubricate the gas struts not recommended by manufacturers, they have oil inside to keep the seals moist)

Our roof failed again today just before leaving Butefest. Luckily I've had to deal with this before and got it sorted out in less than half an hour this time. Both times we've had a failure, it has been the thread inserts holding a motor coming away from the roof itself. I've spent this afternoon "Aralditing" in the threads for the side which didn't fail last time.

So add checking that the motor is securely mounted to the roof to your service schedule.
