Intermittent Oil Warning Light ??

Hi guys,

The oil warning light on my 95 diesel Bongo came on a couple for weeks ago after a few minutes of driving on the way back from a festival. I drove on for a bit, as I looked for a safe place to stop and pull over to check it, but by that time the light had gone out again. No problems the rest of the way home (less than an hour).

The next time I drove the Bongo just in town, the same thing happened. Light came on after a few minutes, stayed on for a few minutes, then went out again.

I checked the oil level, all ok, and no sign of any oil leaking. I bought the Bongo in May, but checked the service history and can see that the oil and filter was changed 8 months ago, and hasn't had a lot of driving since then.

I called a local garage, who suggested that it might be an oil pressure issue, but that they weren't sure if they had they right fitment to measure the pressure.

Does anyone know what the problem might be? or what other checks I can do? or direct me to any similar threads in the forum?

Thanks in advance!!
Tim.

Might be worth checking/replacing pressure sensor and connections before starting to get majorly worried.

Hi
The oil light is also a low oil warning light. Check the oil level. It gives you all of this sort of information in the glovebox handbook...might be worth getting one from the Club Shop
Cheers

Hi Helen. That was my first thought, but they seem to have done that already.

Thanks guys for your replies.

I forgot to mention that when I took the Bongo round the block a couple of times yesterday to test it, the oil light was not coming on and the issue seems to have gone away. But I'm worried about doing a longer drive before getting it checked out.

The first thing you need to do is have the oil pressure tested ,this is common practice with any mechanic to eliminate the deadly Low Pressure dilemma. Don't take any chances.

When the pressure is checked the oil switch is (normally )removed and it is common practice to fit a new switch .

That sounds like very sensible advice to me - I'd have thought a pressure tester that connects where the oil switch lives might be pretty standard piece of equipment for a garage?

Thanks, good to know. Is the oil switch something that I can order form the Bongo shop? or is that something that most garages can order in?

How 'deadly' is low oil pressure?

Cheers, Tim.

The oil switch is quite a common type , I would personally let your garage supply the parts , they are readily available at Motor Factors.

Re "How deadly is Low Oil Pressure".....you don't want to find out.

This is the SW ..

Hi Mike
Ooops...how did I miss that?...so they have
I must admit, we don't hear many complaints of low oil pressure on here....let's hope it's not a first!
