Bongo Fury

Hi,

My bongo makes a creaky noise a bit like a rusty gate closing on the very last bit of full lock only if I'm turning the wheels to the right, apart from that it drives fine, I checked the power steering fluid which is filled to the brim but looks to be a bit dirty, I will get the garage to look when it's in for a service as it's going to be due one, does anyone have an idea what could cause this?

It maybe the UJ joints on the steering column getting worn or the lubes dried out ..

There is one by the drivers foot .. and one close to the steering rack ..

I spray mine with aerosol motor cycle chain lube .. it goes on like a penetrating oil .. but turns into a sticky grease ..

did you say the fluid level is full to the brim. it should only be half full at the res, look for the fill to line on the side.

at the top of the strut is a bearing to allow the whole strut to turn, this may be dry on one side or the other, you could lift the top cap and spray with lube, or the bottom ball joint in the wishbone may be worn and is dry when on full lock, check the dust covers are intact.

get someone to turn the steering wheel while you crawl about with a listening rod (wood handled screwdriver), put the screwdriver on the suspected area and hold the wood end to your ear. dont try this at 50mph. . best over a pit or ramps.

Thanks for your replies, I will have a proper look in a couple of days when I'm off from work, the dust covers were replaced as we're deteriated on MOT so maybe this could be the problem with dirt getting in or drying out etc. I did wonder if it made a difference if the power steering fluid was over filled, I will see about lowering the levels to normal.


I will get under and get someone to wiggle the steering wheel to see if I can pinpoint it better.

I got down under and listened to the noise and it's coming from the cv joint next to the wheeleft on the drivers side.

If I get this part on the link below and get my local garage to fit it, would I be getting the right part?

I want to use the bongoing next week and it will save time if I have the parts rather than book it in and then having to wait for the garage to order them I'm.

The CV (constant velocity joint) usually produces the noise when on full lock and vehicle (drive shaft)is Moving. If it is the (outer)CV joint that is required yes that is the correct part. Personally I would let the garage test the vehicle and supply the parts, these CV joints a readily available off the shelf.
