Bongo Fury

Jumped in bongo this morning and won't start. Turns over but doesn't fire. No sign of problems before started fine every day until now. It's diesel 2.5.
What should I check first?

I am in Chesterfield while it might be the blind leading the blind, I have nothing planned if you would like me to have a butcher's I could come and have a look. Drop me a PM for contact details.

A: If it was the starter motor it would try to turn over. But if it is rapid clicks (or nothing at all) it is either the battery or the alternator. Try jump starting your car with another battery. If it does not start, it is the alternator. If it starts, your battery has died.

It could the the diesel stop valve on the injector pump although they more commonly seem to fail in the open position so the engine won't switch off. Plenty of fuel in the tank, not got a dodgy fuel gauge earth?

Ok just charged battery reconnected and it started straight away, not lumpy running or anything running smooth as normal. Turned off then it would not start again even though engine was turning over quickly. Battery flat again now so will try again. Glow plugs getting power although only showing 10.9 volts at glowplug.

Fuel ok filled up a couple of days ago. Was thinking it could be a blockage but it was running so smooth when just started.
Maybe it is something with battery.

Thanks Ian just trying all obvious things first.

think i would go with simon on this, check the voltage at the fuel shut off valve on the top of the pump, then unscrew it and test it, and check the sealing washer is still on the end as they do perish, (bit like a tap washer at home).

How do I test it once removed?

its a magnetic switch so earth the body of it and put a 12 volts feed to the top connector, the plunger will fly in or out (cannot remember which way it works) mind the spring and bits dont fly away. .
strip it in bits and clean it it may be just muck thats stopping it working right. or they are cheap enough to replace. i have a spare one in the safe, dont know why i keep it there though

the plunger isnt shown in the pics earlier, but once you see it in your hand you will understand. think of it like a household tap, but instead of turning to close its done by lecktrickery.

How do I get to it to get it out of bongo don't seem to be able to even get to small nut on top!

Has fuel filter been changed recently? Has banjo filter been checked? Has fuel tank cap been loosened off? Has the fuel pump been overhauled lately? I'm not saying its any of these things, just that its worth eliminating them from police enquiries.

Well just charged battery again. Couldn't get diesel cut off valve out only managed to get plastic cap off and test voltage. Thought I would clean banjo filter instead but that looked OK . Cleaned it anyhow. Sprayed electrics in area with gt40 and it now starts.
Was it the banjo filter? Or I am starting to think a bad connection in wiring somewhere.
If it is wiring sure problem will come back.
I have ordered a fuel cut of valve which will keep for if needed but how do I get a spanner on the old one.

Great news it started ok. Did it run lumpy at all immediately after starting? How old is the battery?

Started up straight away, no lumpiness or rough running. Don't think it's its the battery, it's not new but it terns engin over well
