Bongo Fury

I have to say mine has to be the A303. I love those open plains and the wide open skies and the customary nod to the Henge as you pass it.

Is the one out of my town ( when were going away )
Don't like the same road as much on our way back from holidays tho

Wick to John 'O' Groats A99 and the A836 over the Scrabster All nice coastal scenery

For all of Team Muz - the A888 - the only classified road on the Isle of Barra. Of course, getting there takes in some pretty special scenery too


All roads lead to Castlebay

The road through Glencoe, closely followed by the road down to Glen Brittle on Skye.

Oh and the road past Loch Maree, the road back from Big Sands campsite at Gairloch, the road out of Ullapool (going North) in fact pretty much any road in the north west of Scotland.

The favourite road that I've never driven my bongo on, is the road from St Ives to Zennor in Cornwall. It's where I had my first driving lesson (too many years ago) and the one I will enjoy driving if I can ever convince my other half it's ok to drive the van all the way down to Cornwall from Scotland.

I never had favourite roads as such, but I liked Devon to drive in, and Warwickshire...New Forest.
Favourites so far are France and Switzerland for driving, and over here I love the little roads to our village...rolling countryside, and tree-lined roads where the trees arch over the road...peaceful in summer, with flickering light, and stunning in winter as the hard frost and ice turn it into a crystal kingdom from Narnia!....totally unbelievable!

Sounds good Helen. At last I am hearing about something nice coming out of a third world country Not to worry tho' soon they will all be over here and you will have it all to yourself, give us a shout when it happens as we will join you when have no where to run to?

Though you might miss the view for keeping your eyes on avoiding the potholes Helen bemoans in Bulgaria...



Then again, will the UK be heading down the same road before long

Meanwhile, we had a lovely drive through the Trough of Bowland this summer that took us through heather clad hills, past a roadside canteen doing real tea in real mugs, and bringing us out without warning to the most stunning view of the Lancashire coast and over to the mountains of the Lake District. Best drive i've done in a while and not many cars.

I think we might have to get a bit more adventurous with our Bongoing. Scotland must surely be on the cards soon. I may put a post up asking for some suggestions.

Indeed. I have loved the A303 many years back. I recall a long trip along it, made around dawn, in my concours British racing green A35 van, as I sought to escape London and get to my destination before the world awoke. But that's the problem with roads down south - too many people and cars. You must try and get yourself off on a long tour of the UKs more remote country roads. Traveling these in a Bongo is a delight.

The trouble is that Bulgaria thinks it isn't a third-world country ...We see roads in Africa on telly that would be envied over here!...Regarding the scenery, it's no better here than any other European country, despite what the travel guides say!...A lot of Europe is very beautiful...it's just a bit less developed here, and winter is very cold , down to minus 30 C. so it builds some natty frosts!...summer goes as high as mid to upper 40s some years, and all the lovely green country gets to a khaki colour.

That road with the 4x4 in your picture is a proper road...maybe a bit of tarmac missing, but that's luxury!....a lot of the roads are like that side turning in the picture. Here's a village street leading to the road at the back of our house:

The chimneys and street light to the left of the tree are to our neighbour's house at the end of our garden

P..S. Helen - Yes I suspected that might be one of the famous potholed Bulgarian main roads you've often referred to in your posts. Great fun trying to negotiate them but not conducive to taking in the view

My favourite roads to Bongo are the back roads of Cornwall.....every journey is an adventure.. ...just wide enough for a Bongo with passing places to allow oncoming cars to pass.. .

Once while using my OS map I was navigating one of these roads when I met an oncoming vehicle on the brow of a hill....being a Gentleman ( no comments please ) I reversed back to a passing place and waited to let him pass...and waited and waited....so I set off again only to meet the same vehicle at the same point on the brow of the hill...it turned out that we had BOTH reversed to a passing place and waited...and waited and waited....we had a good laugh about it and tossed a coin to decide who would reverse....I won and we parted on very good terms....
