Bongo Fury

Need to get my V6 a new exhaust. SS seems to be the way to go if I'm going to be keeping the van for many more years. So been looking around at local suppliers (Lincoln/Lincolnshire) and have been quoted £400 excluding the CAT. £500+ with the cat.
I actually require complete system, so why they'd quote for without I don't know. Anyway what prices have others been paying & is there a good company near me. Don't mind travelling a bit, say Sheffield, Nottingham etc.

I know Walsall is probably a bit far for you but these guys are excellent and fabricate and fit the exhaust in about three hours giving you the choice of sound and appearance. They will use your existing cat or will use one of theirs which they make onsite for about £120 as I recall. Why not factor in a trip to Birmingham, Stratford or one of many great places around the Midlands and make a day of it. Cat back costs about £300.

In case its nearer, there used to be a place in Leeds also that I think got got reports. Can't remember their name though and it was a long time ago. Maybe have a search/google etc.?

Can a simple SS system ever be made as capable of damping pulsed sound as mild steel? I'd need to hear it to be convinced. That said, many seem happy with the sound of their SS exhausts so what do I know

That'll probably be Tony Banks (not the keyboard-playing one from Genesis). My only advice is: don't buy anything from anyone (including TB) that you have to fit yourself as you could find the pipes don't line up. PM me (or search on here) for details of problems a few of us have had with 'mail order' exhausts. Best bet is to take the van somewhere & let them fit it & then it will be their problem to get it right .

Would you say though that SS as supplied by this kind of outfit will always sound rather different to mild steel?

I had a Tony Banks exhaust on my diesel Bongo & it sounded a bit more "meaty" but not too load or droning at speed. The nearest thing I could liken it to is a diesel boat engine. I can't say it performed any better than the original but the fact that it didn't look like a rusty dustbin behind the bumper was a plus point.

I've had one of his on mine now for over 3 years,at the time the price was only £75 more than an ordinary exhaust,also had the choice of different tailpipes.It does as Simon says sound a bit meatier but not overly so.
