Bongo Fury

Hi - driving back from Brighton after a nice five days away, Daisy started to make a rattling sound. After looking through the forum I'm pretty sure the crank shaft pulley is the culprit.

When looking to buy a new one, noted that AVA charge £299! Kept looking and found George is doing a second hand one for £55 and AutoJap Spares are doing a brand new for £125. Wondering what to go for - anyone have any views?

£299 for a pulley!?!?!?!?! Unless its a v difficult job to change the pulley I think I'd have a punt on a £55 one. Might be interesting to contact AVA and ask if there is something extra special about the one they sell to explain the huge cost differential. Probably 'genuine Mazda' but is the difference enough to be a deal clincher? Could it be the same part as the Ford Ranger engine that it basically is (assuming you're diesel). http://www.fordpartsuk.com/shop/search. ... aft+pulley

I had an autojap one earlier this year. The second hand route for something that is known to perish just seemed like a false economy to me.

I tried to tackle the job myself however that bolt is very very difficult to undo. Have a search and you will find talk of huge lengths of scaffold tube and even trying to undo using the starter motor!!! I gave mine to my local garage and he completed it for £40. Money well spent in my book (+ the new part obviously).

No issues with the autojap spares one or delivery etc.

george has second hand ones, the other 2 do new stuff, all three come well recommended, its down to your budget really.

Thanks for the replies everyone - very helpful. I think I'll go for the middle ground and get the Auto Jap spare. Would it be wise to replace the belts at the same time?

100% change the belts. I didn't but one of them kept flipping as it didn't like being reinstalled. Also get good quality ones. I went with cheap ones of eBay saving a fiver however they made a real racket and I had to end up changing them again for decent ones!
