Stalling Bongo 2.5td - Ideas please

Post by Mark Elvin » Sun Sep 13, 2015 3:59 pm

OK, Ideas ref stalling Bongo 2.5td please.

It drives A1, but occasionally when stopping the idle becomes very lumpy, then it stalls.

Just had backplate seals done on fuel pump.

The first port of call is the 4 filters.

Check the fuel cap breather valve, also make sure it is not sticking in gear.etc etc etc

PS,because it has recently been service does not mean it has not picked up some contaminated fuel.

Also check the pull (vacuum) at the pump on tick-over.

Just found the small pipe on the EGR disconnected. The one that's on the same side as the electrical plug, whatever that does. It's split so badly it falls off every time it's pushed on. Time for a new piece of vacuum hose.

Hopefully that's going to fix it.

Vac hose has arrived, hopefully I'll fit later & confirm if the issue is resolved.

It will be interesting to see if that is the culprit, Mark.

Over the years before I had the Bongo, vacuum hoses were always the first things I checked after ignition leads when petrol cars stalled on deceleration.

Currently, I've got a wire adrift from the moulded connector to one of those solenoids in the vicinity of that hose. I did have a couple of stalls earlier in the summer but I couldn't relate them to that area.

Unfortunately, the wire has broken off right at the plug and it is not going to be repairable in situ so I will have to cut the other good wire to the loom as well and take it indoors for re wiring. The job has gone on the back burner as the old girl is running well. Maybe I never rev high enough for that part to operate!

42-590a is a breather, just behind it inside the line is a valve, remove and wash out. its clipped onto the inner chassis leg, just pop it off.

or just pull the rubber pipe off at the other end and test it for a week or two.

what year is the bongo.???

So...

It's not the EGR valve, I've blanked it off & no change.

It's not the breather as it does it with the fuel cap loosened off.

Just the Banjo filter to check now, but I have a horrible feeling I'm staring a new fuel pump in the face. :( Next question is whether I do it myself or just pay someone.

Decided to replace the pump, all other alleys are exhausted now, got a refurbished unit from George at Bongospares as I wanted the reassurance nothing else is amiss.

Gutted to hear this reiterated. Makes a mockery of a Bongo specialist (well reputed) who charges in the order of 5-6 hours to replace all the seals. Granted there is work once the pump is removed but ....

OK, ADS have fitted the new pump, driven 12 miles through town traffic & no stalling issues, before it would stall a lot.

They said the issues were almost certainly caused by running on veg oil as it effects the seals.

Woops - think there was another Bongo on here not long ago whose problems were suspected of being linked to a history of of veg oil use

Fingers crossed that's it and life will return to normal. Out of interest, what % veg oil had you been using, and for how long (time/miles).
