failing 4 wheel drive

Post by bongosaab » Mon Sep 07, 2015 8:52 am

The cost of remaking the four wheel drive isnt worth it for my elderly bongo and I have been told I can rip it out and become a 2 wheel drive, rear wheel drive. Any advice on practicality of doing this? Will I be creating long term problems with the rear wheel drive? How will the bongo perform as a 2 wheel drive conversion?

As a minimum you need to remove the front prop shaft(s) & centre bearing, this is just a case of unbolting the prop at the front diff and removing the two bolts securing the centre bearing then the whole lot comes out of the transfer box. Ours is currently like this pending a decision on what to do next but it drives ok and has done hundreds of miles like this. Under normal driving conditions, all the drive is to the rear axle anyway and the front axle only comes into play when the viscous coupling decides it should.

To do it properly you should strip the drive out of the front axle as you're otherwise turning all that mechanism unnecessarily.

You need to tell your insurance too which may be more of a problem than you think

Is there really no way the viscous coupling system can be repaired or replaced? Seems a bit sad if so.

Is 27-580 still available I wonder? I'm a 2WD of course so its academic to me but I'd hate to give up 4WD if I had it.
