Bongo Fury

Hi,what's the bongo like to drive if the steering belt fails?.
Just checked belts fluids etc,I have about 25% of my steering belt left!!!!!!. Away tomorrow morning so can't get it done until Friday?.

I bet there a right pig to drive with out power steering
I would source the size now while you have search facility and then stop at the first auto shop you pass
Only a 10 min job todo aa or rac should do it at the side of the road if you have one with you
Get 2 and do the other one next to it at same time

suppose it depends what else is on the belt, like alternator or water pump etc. which bongo you got.

The power steering pump is driven via gears from the crankshaft (on the diesel) so you must be getting mixed up with the A/C belt. Best case if it breaks you lose the A/C, but worst case is it gets tangled around the crankshaft which then takes out the pair of belts for alternator & water pump with all the potential overheating that could ensue. Best bet would be to remove it all together now & then treat yourself to a whole new set.

Obviously you have a petrol vehicle, personally I would change the belt ASAP, if the belt goes TU it can cause locking problems with the RVs in the pump/rack.

The serpentine belt on the V6 drives the water pump, so heavy power steering when it breaks is the least of your worries.

Ah yes, but in the age of power steering the mechanical thingamebobs seem to have changed. I reckon there's no way that even the heaviest of the non power assisted cars I had even came close to a Bongo with its power steering offline. And of course, today's post-power-steering trained motorists would probably not understand what to do quickly enough when the steering appeared to stop working. Oddly, the worst car I recall having in this respect was not by old 1950s heavyweights (Wolsey 6/90, MG Magnette) but my Cavalier SRI c1987 with its big fat tyres. I'm pretty good at judging how to reverse into a tight parking space. The problem with that car was that you knew the steering you needed to do but it was virtually impossible to swing the steering wheel as required in order to do it when turned in the seat and using one hand. Very frustrating. And what were Vauxhall thinking designing a car like that without power steering in 1987 when the technology was well established!?! It went down the motorway though like it was on rails, even in a howling crosswind, which was some consolation.
