Refused insurance
Hi!
I am the proud first time owner of a Bongo and am having a bit of trouble with insuring it (probably should have checked that first, oops!).
I called 2gether up today and tried to get a quote for my, as yet, unmodified 8 seater Bongo.
The guy on the phone tried to get quotes on a 'secondary leisure car' basis initially as he said this would bring the price down by quite a lot (although I'm still undecided on whether to sell my car or not) but was turned down by all the underwriters due to the Bongo being stored on the road (no drive) and due to my house being around the corner from a scrap yard.
I'm 26, 7 years no claims on my Saxo, no convictions, full time employment etc so it seems to be my location/storage that is the problem.
I've got quotes from comparethemarket etc of around £700 which seems a lot but about what I was told it would be by 2gether if insured simply as an import without any protection for camper conversions. Does anyone have any advice on who would be a better bet? I'm slightly concerned that all the specialist ones will not want to touch it for the same reasons I found today!
Cheers
Jon

Re: Refused insurance
If you have a camper conversion try the Camping and Caravan Club.
They won't insure unconverted Bongos.

Re: Refused insurance
Unconverted are generally more expensive than converted, especially with campervan specialists. Is your first car also parked on-road? Seems rough justice on the Bongo if so. As an additional vehicle you won't always have your NCD transferred, though you will get this benefit if it replaces your current car.
Insurance comes up here a lot so try a search in this forum. Unfortunately the vehicle is only one of several factors in the insurance but you'll get a good few companies to try. I'm not sure how helpful go compare is for Bongos.

Re: Refused insurance
Mine is as yet unconverted and got a my insurance from LV £320 9yr NCB but that is with a business element. Prior to that I was with 2Gether for two years for around the same but they upped it this year another £90 so I buggered off to LV. I also had another carat the time but they mirrored the NCB to make the Bongo a bit cheaper? Very helpful I thought.
Strange that?

Re: Refused insurance
I was quoted £1000, so I made this
Cost about £150.
Its now an 8 seater in the eyes of many insurance companies its a camper, V5 is still MPV, but if you explain.
Its an 8 seater
Factory fitted seats convert to a bed or Table and chairs.
You have added a permanently ( 4 screws) fitted Hob and sink with storage as that's all most insurers require to cover it as a camper
I pay £200 second car 3000 miles limit with Flux

Re: Refused insurance
If you put your location in your profile, we could probably advise better. As you say, your location makes a heck of a difference.

Re: Refused insurance
Not sure how being down the road from the scrap yard would be any more significant to motor insurance than say living next to a cemetery would affect your life insurance
I seem to recall reading that Admiral will cover non-converted vehicles on a multicar policy, but if you've got a conversion then Camping and Caravanning Club are very competitive.

Re: Refused insurance
Depends on whether you use the converted bongo as your everyday vehicle as well! I was told it would be more if I used my converted bongo as an everyday vehicle, but it's still cheaper than insuring and taxing two vehiclescmm303 wrote:Unconverted are generally more expensive than converted, especially with campervan specialists. Re: Refused insurance
My unconverted V6 costs me £280, fully comp & that includes commuting to work as well. Thats with Aviva. I insured through on of the specialist insurance brokers that advertise on the forum. They did the usual shopping round for the deal & when I got the policy through found it to be with Aviva. When it came to renewal carried on the same policy directly my self saving the brokers fee so making it cheaper. I do have over 5 years no claims & aged 56 and live in low crime area of the country so that will be a big factor.
Cheers
