I have found a few drips of oil here..
Image
The picture is taken under the van looking up at the back of the engine. Its a big black tube and it has a drip of black oil on the bottom.

I have wiped them away, and they seem to come back.
Never any puddles on the drive.
Any ideas?

is it leaking on the rocker cover gasket and running to the back of the head, if not then where the red arrow is, at the other side of that pipe ----- 180 deg away from the arrow, is the crank case breather pipe, it enters the top of the thick black pipe, this takes a portion of the crank case and rocker cover gasses and puts it into the air system, this then gets burned, its a greenish way of getting rid of oily vapour. when this vapour cools it condenses and the oil drops out.
if you lift the passy seat up half way along the rocker cover side you will see a 25mm pipe that leaves the rocker cover and goes towards the rear of the head, then it enters the thick black pipe. check the clips at each end and the pipes are not split or melted.
check that the clips on the entire air box, turbo, and intercooler system are all air tight, if one is loose it can be that the vapour instead of being sucked into the air inlet manifold can stall and cool so dropping its oil before its burnt.
or that the valve stem oil seals are worn, or the piston rings are slightly worn.

this shows some of the intercooler pipes, and the intercooler.

this shows the turbo, and the pipe in question, and its connections.

another thing that can affect this is using the correct oil, what oil are you using ??

the correct oil is 5w 30 so yer pays yer money etc. ive tried to establish whether the oil you use is ok but ive failed, just because plenty of people use it doesnt make it right. but i recon its too thick on start up, stickyness of oil is also a factor, its sort of like your blood having a high cholesterol reading.
i cannot even prove if this oil is suitable for engines with egr systems as all the castrol blurb is a little vague.

is your egr valve blanked off, or still working to the best of your knowledge.

The EGR pipe is still there, I don't think it is blanked.

the egr when working diverts some of the exhaust gasses from the exhaust through the egr valve into the air inlet manifold to re burn the gasses to improve what comes out of the exhaust. the process puts dirt and carbon into the engine, this makes the engine oil work a lot harder.
if you put the wrong engine oil in the engine the carbon and dirt turns your engine oil into a very oily grinding paste.

the correct oil for egr engines is able to cope with the dirt and carbon, so egr engine oil is vital for the long term health of your engine.

read this below. note how egr systems lower the running temps of the engine. this may be a factor when deciding whether to blank off your egr or not. ive had mine blanked for 5 years with no noticeable increase in engine temps etc.

First class oil and perfectly suitable for these Old vehicles, in actual fact probably better than the original spec oils used in Japan.

We use lots of GTX and Magnatec 10w/40 oil. We use 5w/30 on new vehicles.

Also Comma and Lucas oils (just in case they take the Huff) .

not falling out here but its little snipits of info like this below that make me hesitate when gtx is mentioned for older cars.

quote.
Car and Van Servicing
We can offer a choice of oil.

We now stock Castrol Edge, Magnatec and GTX.
Did you know that the oil is a major part of your service and the oil used will make a difference to your cars performance.
To ensure optimum performance we recommend you pay a little extra to get the oil your manufacturer recommends for you car,
If you drive a Audi,Volkswagon,Skoda,BMW, or Mercedes Benz this is Castrol EDGE
If you drive a Ford,Toyota,Mazda, volvo,Land Rover or Jaguar this is Castrol Magnatec
If your car is a bit older then Castrol GTX 10W-40 is the choice for you.

reading the volvo forums it states gtx contains sodium additives, magnatec and edge dont .
