Steering Wheel Squeak

Hi all!

First post from me but the forum has been a great help to date.

My Bongo is a '96 2.5 TD Auto.

I have an annoying squeak coming from my steering wheel, it is worse when interior temperature is warm (when the Bongo has been sat in the sun).
I've narrowed it down to the yellow plastic part pictured below. This turns with the wheel but seems to be meeting some resistance somewhere, hence the squeak. I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this and can offer a fix before I try and dismantle the whole thing!

Thanks!

Others to check are the UJ ..(the flexible / swivel joints) .. on the steering column one by the drivers foot .. one under the 'bonnet' above the steering rack ..

These are known to dry out / lack lube .. I find the easiest, is to use aerosol motor cycle cycle chain grease ..

As it's designed to lubricate the links of a chain .. it goes on like a thin penetrating oil .. but dries as a super sticky grease ..

Never had this myself. Maybe try a squirt of some suitable spray (silicon spray for plastics maybe?) on it and see if it stops? Good luck, keep us posted as putting squeaks and rattles to bed is always a bit of a challenge.

Correct, no airbags.

I tried some lube and a wiggle, still a squeak. Then while jabbing away with pliers in frustration the yellow plastic bit separated from the 2 lugs holding it to the back of the wheel (they were already split and bent!). It no longer squeaks! The plastic ring still turns with the steering but has no resistance... I'll keep you updated if this causes any issues down the line...

Does the horn still work and do the indicators still self-cancel?
