timing belt (2 litre)

My garage says it will take 10 hours to replace the timing belt (£40 per hour labour). This sounds like a long time? I have never used them before (my old garage closed) and I don't know if I can trust them. I live in Ealing and I have a 2lt 2004 Bongo.

The diesel can be done in about 2 hours. V6 takes just over half a day & that includes changing the oil seals, so 10 hours seems a little excessive. Hopefully one of the 2 litre owners will be along shortly with more details.

Price for mine (2ltr petrol), November 2013, was £62.57 for belt & tensioner; £125 labour = £225.05 including VAT.

Assuming a similar labour cost (£40 per hour - no reason to think the hourly rate would be too different) that suggests three hours labour. They did re-grease the alternator belt tensioner pulley bearing as well.

(Edited to correct poor maths and fat fingers...)

£200/250 should cover this job comfortably as long as there are no complications.

Thank you so much for your replies. I guess I need to find a different garage. Does anyone know of a good garage in West London?

Out of town Discount Trucks, near Newbury, are well thought of, and there is a Fact Sheet on Bongo Friendly garages in the Members Area.

Edit: I'll report this myself incase it doesn't comply.

Perhaps I have unrealistic expectations of finding a local garage. I wouldn't have thought of Newbury as being near Ealing W5 (but thank you anyway). On the Bongo Friendly Garage List there are three London garages, two in south east london and one in east london. They would be a bit stressful to get to from north west London. So if anyone has anywhere a bit closer they could recommend, I would be really grateful.

I had my V6 cambelt done at Allan's in Plymouth which is 130 miles away from home, but I went there because he has a good reputation & knowledge of the engine.

Ealing to Newbury is around 50 miles, but might work out cheaper & quicker if you're not paying for the local garage to spend 10 hours doing it :)

I believe there is a place called Lakeside in the London area that is used by 321Away so would be familiar with Bongos.

Exactly, along with ADS, who are 10 miles, I've used Allans, Ian Taylor and Wheelquick.

I'm not about to do along trip for a sidelight bulb, but for more specialist work its well worth it.

Often the work can be tied in with a day out or on the way to holiday.
