Oil leak. ? Transmission

Hi everyone
Any ideas on what I believe is the transmission leaking oil
Underneath I've found a wide sponge like seal that's soggy with oil and a rubber bung with a nipple on, it's really flexible and wobbly 'm not sure if it's some sort of breather all around there is wet with oil and it's started dripping over the plastic protective cover now onto the drive. Any ideas on what's causing it.
Will try and post a picture

Can't say I know what area / part you mean ..
A common problem are the very long fluid cooler pipes from the side of the gearbox to the bottom of the radiator corrode and transmission fluid gets pumped out of the perforations ....

i think you mean 16-145 on this pic.

i think its a tell tale, this lets you know when oil is leaking from either the back end of the engine seal, or the front of the gearbox seal.

It's wet around part number 16-145 it's called a rubber seal but it's like a bung with a flexible nipple on it.......and around that it's like a sponge material that's where all the oil seems to be ! Anyone have any idea if it's the gearbox seal I can't seem to post a picture his do you do it folks

16-145 is a rubber bung / drain at the bottom of the torque converter housing which may indicate a leaking seal on the engine or gearbox.

If the transmission oil level is too high on the dipstick can this cause leakage anywhere or damage other components, as I vaguely remember it looking quite high... That's where it's looking the wettest but it is the lowest point. Hope it's not a big job ! My local Mazda dealer probably has never seen a bongo !

when you dip the gearbox oil with the engine NOT running, it will read high, the oil level should be read with the engine running, and the gearbox in drive with of course your foot on the foot brake or similar..

I usually do it with a warm engine .. the engine running .. the foot brake / hand brake on .. go through the gears from 'L' to 'P' several times .. leave the transmission in 'P' .. lift the drivers seat .. then dip the box ..

On the later 'boxes, the dipstick has markings for hot and cold. I found it was a bit of pain to get the level right as you need the engine running to check it but you don't want to too much or too little when you start it up and then run thru the gears. The other complication is that the ATF goes in via the dipstick tube which then makes it tricky to get an accurate reading on the dipstick as oil on the sides of the tube will contaminate the level. Next time, I will accurately measure the amount removed via Pela pump and refill with the same amount.

Yes that's the area that has oil around ! My mechanic says oil shouldn't be in there it's the transfer case .
He is going to take a look at it 19th of August while he is doing the coolant brake fluid and diff oils
Thanks for all your posts !

Sorry to hijack this post.
I have the later style gearbox, with the 2 different temp options on the dipstick.
Is there a different way to check the level on these?
Cheers.

Just normal .. warm engine .. Hand brake hard on .. move the lever from L to P several times .. leave in P / Handbrake on and check with the engine running ..

Its just the same procedure only difference is you use the lower level when cold and the high level when hot.
To save any confusion you would probably be better using the HOT mark. (of course when the fluid is Hot)
Good Luck.

Just a wee bit information from an Auto box Specialist that might interest you.....
Quote...Re checking the fluid level with the engine running..........
Check the level in
PARK.
Advice from a transmission rebuilder.
