Bongo Fury

Hi there.
We've had our 2000 2.5td 4x4 auto Bongo for about a year. Apart from being an awesome thing it has one fault that I can't seem to get anyone to understand or fix!!!

When it's cold it goes like the clappers. When it warms up the turbo seems to stop working
I've had a good look and the bit that sits right next to the turbo seems to be the thing that's causing the problem. When it's cold the little rod moves back and forward and the engine boosts up. When it heats up the piece moves right toward the turbo and stops moving - then no boost. If I move it, or fix it in place where it sits when it's cold - then boost!

2 questions then I guess...

What's up with it?!
Will it do any harm fixing the rod in place so the engine can boost up?

is it a winter pack model with the valve in the exhaust and a switch by your right knee with an engine symbol on it ??

Sounds like a problem with the vacuum controlled variable vane turbo. Other people have had similar issues which are typically accompanied with flashing warning light.

It all sounds a tad confusing. If I use a pair of mole grips to keep the little rod that goes from the vacuum to the turbo in the middle the van goes brilliantly. Is this likely to cause any problems. In my mind it's just keeping it the way it sits before it gets hot & moves and stops the boost?

check all the pipes and see if all the solenoid switches are working when they should be. most of the solenoids tend to switch at or around the 50degc coolant temp point, this is when its (at working temperature ) and the glow plugs switch off etc, so it sounds like something isnt switching when it reaches this temp. the temperature is got from the fan switch via the ecu, then to the 12v solenoids, to test each one just unplug from the loom (and therefore the ecu) then put 12 volts to each one in turn you should hear it click, they are polarity conscious so try both ways when wiring them, get a piece of pipe and maybe blow through or test for suction on each one.

What fuel are you using?
Our 2001 Bongo didn't like supermarket fuel and went into limp mode when hot.
Using branded fuel, no problems.

i would persevere with fixing the root cause. They must go to the expense of building variable vane turbo for good reason. (Apart from limp mode to protect an engine with a perceived problem!!)

Check all the tubes and valves under the passenger seat around the turbo area.
There is also a pipe coming up from the front of the engine which feeds vacuuum to these various valves. If any of these are leaking or the valves have failed then it will cause a problem.
