Slight concern

Afternoon all,
Just a slight concern, in the recent slightly warming conditions my young cargo in the back were getting warm so from the front I impressed them with the ability to turn their cool air fans on from the front.
Only to be met with DAAAAD! it is blowing hot air out!!!!
I am a little concerned with this, is it a major problem brewing or is there just something sticking??
Any help would be appreciated as off to France in it soon.
(It's a 99 T new shape electric heater control panel in the front)
Thank you

My early model has a separate heater control in the back. Assume yours has something similar and if so, are you confident the kids had checked it was in the COLD position?

The switch at the front only allows the rear controls to work, you then need to set temperature, direction etc. from the panel in the rear.

On the later ones you can adjust all the rear settings except temperature from the front, so you can switch on & off and adjust fan speed and whether it's coming out of the top or bottom vents etc.
Just make sure the temp is set low and they should still be impressed.

Great thanks....
The rear controler is manuel and it is definatley on cold, if it wasn't it was when I tested it when I got home.
Any thoughts?

There is only one compressor for the Air Con. cooling system, so presuming your getting really cold air from the front then that side of things is working. After that there is the evaporation matrix for the rear itself or the control of the air circulation vents in the rear section, maybe the layout diagram might help, the system is mounted behind the drivers seat behind the trim.

I'm not getting really cold air I would associate with Air Con...

In that case I would first investigate getting the Air Con. refilled then, it may just be a couple of years of non use and the seals have let the gas out! The seals need regular use to keep the working.

Many thanks, will try and investigate this weekend.

Had mine re-gassed yesterday. I'd had a bust compressor belt for a bit without noticing it (the aircon mechanic didn't either!), so my system has been idle for a bit. The mechanic said if it turns out the seals have dried out a bit and the system doesn't hold gas for a decent period, they will refill next time using something special instead of the usual PAG oil: this stuff is excellent at restoring the seals to normal service he says. I've no idea whether changing the seals is economical so hope that doesn't happen.
I now have ice cold air out of the system (though ambient air hasn't been that hot lately so the real test is yet to come).
Does the hot/cold slider in the back feel normal when you use it?

Mine is exactly the same, so I'm watching this with interest!

The rear heater on some of these vehicles have a temperature actuator and a diverter actuator if this helps. The system is of a constant hot flow type using flaps to control hot/cold air to the cabin/interior.

Thanks for the advice all.
I will spend some time on it this weekend and let you know any outcomes... if any.... as myself and spanners are not the best of friends... it usually ends up with wrapped knuckles and lots of explitives
Have a nice weekend.

Watching with interest. Same problem, just never bothered fixing it. Aircon pipes underneath to rear get cold but only squirts out hot air from vents. Ruled out the temp sensor because I believe this is ignored with the temp set to minimum.

So at the moment I'm trying to work out whether a leak at the weekend was from the heater matrix hose connection or the matrix itself. I stripped out the interior panel last night to reveal the whole rear heater unit and noticed the plastic tops are clipped on to the body below.
Do you think I can get lucky and get the clips off in situ to lift the matrix out, avoiding disconnecting the air con pipes to remove the whole unit?
