Bongo Fury

Hi all, here is a techy question for you, it maybe a silly question? Does the bongo have a mechanical assisted fuel pump?

The FIP is a mechanical driven solo unit.

The diesel engine has a mechanical fuel injection pump which draws fuel from the tank. When the seals fail it can make starting and running rough as extra air is being sucked into the fuel. The petrol versions have an in-tank high pressure pump which pushes it to the injectors.

Thanks Rita/Simon, I was talking to my father-in-law re- parts becoming unavailable? The fuel pump was mentioned and he said it should be a mechanical system on mine so if it goes we will just convert it and put an electric pump on it? He's a very knowledge diesel runner himself so I take a lot of diesel related knowledge from him! Thanks again

That's very interesting, could you ask your F-I-L how he would replace the FIP with an electrical one.

This might be the answer to peeps looking for a replacement FIP in the future.

Presumably the main part would need to be retained for the timing? Some folk have fitted an inline electric pump to help compensate for wear in the main pump.

That sounds like the stuff he was talking about Simon are you saying it will work on a bongo if the fuel pump fails and one isn't available? Or is there a lot of work due to being a bongo?

The pump and injector metering and timing is all built into one unit. There are plenty of spares around for the pre-1999 units and reconditioned units are available for around £400 so I wouldn't be too concerned about not being able to keep it on the road .

Cheers Simon, mine is fine just thinking ahead! I've finished the front of my van, gonna start underneath this wkend i must say I definitely prefer gardening for a living, although I've enjoyed seeing my bongo being transformed from an untidy state to prestine condition

I added an inline 12v pump to my fuel system about 4 years ago its like fitting a pace maker it gave it a new lease of life
