The instuments are connected to a printed circuit board mounted on the back of the instrument cluster. I would remove the cluster & inspect all of the connections and check to see if there are any cracks evident in the circuit board tracks. This would be a good place to start especially as the speedo may have been chipped to convert it to MPH from KPH, so something may have been disturbed.

Just sorted a problem with the temp gauge on my diesel, cleaned up the sensor connection which seemed to fix it for a while but it started playing silly buggers again so fitted a new sensor.O.k. again so far.See link below for how to fit a new sensor.

Don't know if it's similar on the petrol engines.
Sorry can't help with the speedo.

Does the odometer continue to go round when the speedo is not working? The both take a signal from a sensor on the output shaft of the gearbox so in theory they ought to both stop at once, but if one keeps going then you can eliminate the sensor and the wiring.
