lazy seat belts

hi guys,
well I'm well on my way to rebuliding the inners of the bongo having stripped them out before getting new arches welded in...rerouted the rear fog that was really annoying me for some reason
I hate it when cables aren't routed out of the way...anyway I digress (after a couple of G&T's)...I thought I'd take a look at the seat belts whilst I had the trim off and pretty much all of them need help retracting. I took the belt off the side door one and re-wound the spring as far as I could then re installed the balt but it's still sluggish....pulls in fine below the shoulder guide but once passed through the guide it's sluggish. I did notice a slight build up of crud on the guide so cleaned that but no real joy...
is there something else I'm missing does the spring steel really go 'lazy' after 20 years or is there some lubrication I need to do somewhere...is it possible I wonder to dismantle and install a new spring from a scrapy belt....or is it a new belt jobby...and if so, any ideas where I'd ones that would fit the mount ?
thanks,
Ant.
