As Mr Haynes has never visited the Bongo, can anyone confirm how straight forward it is to replace the discs and drums on a 2WD? I have all the kit probably needed but want to get wise as to any demon tweaks...

The MOT flagged up the discs and drums on an advice.

Pretty easy job, but you may want to get a new set of the front spring mounting clips as they tend to disintegrate when disassembled. About £20 on eBay:

Good opportunity to give the calipers a spruce up too. Also consider changing the brake fluid as it should be replaced every two years and it's much easier to bleed with the wheels off.

Remember that if you are working on the rear brakes of a 2WD Bongo there is absolutely nothing other than one remaining rear wheel on the ground to stop it rolling away from the jack or axle stands unless you chock the front wheels.

Also, if it's an auto, you will have to put the transmission in neutral as well as releasing the handbrake if you need to rotate the wheels and doing that will further increase the chance of rolling away.

It's easy to forget this danger if we are used to working on front wheel drive cars which can have either end immobilised to work on the other.

1999 petrol auto 2.0 brake pads replacement.. easy DIY

1999 petrol auto 2.0 brake pads replacement.. easy DIY: The fronts were pretty easy to do!

Only point to watch was the loose spring clips on the lower part of the inboard pads (for some reason or other)
All my spring steel clips stayed intact, treating them gently helped. Remember the order of the anti-squeal and
backing shims, maybe do each pad at one time.

I used a carpentry clamp/cramp to push the pistons in, watching the fluid in the master cyclinder did not over flow or
need draining. Also note the pistons can return out a bit on there own and can need pushing back again.

Added a couple of Youtube Video (apologies it was in the dark [with an owl]) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpr3KK304-U

Easy job indeed. I use a metal g-clamp to compress the pistons and use a piece of wood against the piston to avoid any metal to metal contact and possible risk of dinting the piston surface. Probably over cautious but......

I'd love to know where I might buy anti-rattle clips though as they tend to drop out as pads become worn and new pads don't come with them. Mind you, can't say I get much rattle trouble even when they are missing

Yes the ones that contain eight small convoluted shim steel bits and two more rectangular parts seem to correspond to the ones I encountered BUT I may have been lucky and managed not to damage any nor have any that were corroded (they are lacquered at the very best)

Simon - so thorough is your sanding and preparation that you seem to have completely ground off the die cast lettering on the brake drum. Explain please

New discs :). You don't think I was going to stick those manky rusty things back on with new pads ? :)?

I did spray the discs to try to protect them from the elements but after a while, they show signs of surface rust so not quite so pristine looking now unfortunately.

The front got treated to a spruce-up too:
