Fuel pump ?

Post by davben23 » Tue Apr 21, 2015 11:26 am

Hi Guys

The last few weeks my 2000 2.5d Bongo has been a pain to start from cold (1/2 tun when warm), It turns over a lot and seems to be getting no fuel as i can't see it sucking up the pipe ex filter and when it does eventually start there is no smoke etc.
Tried priming the filter and checking the air bleed screw and for leaks but nothing obvious.
Why does it only do it when cold ?

Regards Dave

Ok can see fuel slowly going up the pipe but taking ages, Eventually filled and cracked the union on the injector but nothing ( Battery went flat ). Checked the immobiliser and fuel cut of getting voltage and seems OK ?
Pump seals ?

Personally I would remove the solenoid, test and inspect the valve, the rubber valves can deteriorate and cause a blockage .

Starts perfect when warm though ? Considering a inline electric fuel pump to prime it ?

I gathered that it starts when warm, I was only pointing out the fact that the solenoid having voltage does not mean that it is fully fictional and not sticking or the valve has not come adrift.

It might be also be worthwhile checking the pull (vacuum) of the pump with the battery fully charged.

Good Luck.

It might also be worthwhile having a look at the NRV....none return valve in the suction line.

Did you check that the glow plug/heaters are getting a supply.?

Yeah all good and working, I can visually see through the fuel not pulling up the pipe after the fuel filter ( Sadly mine does not have the prime facility).

Sounds like the seals in the injector pump are on the way out. As it warms up the rubber becomes more pliable and the diesel will be slightly less viscous when everything has got up to temperature.

Yeah i was thinking that, Was thinking of maybe a in-line 12V pump to prime it via a switch as no sign of external leaks ?

I have heard of that being done before, but it's only really a sticking plaster to mask a problem which might leave you stranded one day. New seals are only a few pounds and will ensure your not leaking fuel out onto the road, or drawing in air which may cause poor running or problems with MOT emissions.

Is this a full removal of the fuel pump to do the seals as it seems like a big job ?
Maybe a job for the experts ?

the side seals on the advance piston are common failures, these are ok to do, but the seal round the front shaft to the timing gear is a pump out job, this one leaks fuel into the timing belt casing so you dont see it, but more importantly it lets in air here when not running.
they do leak around the rear block where the injector pipes come out this also is really a pro job cos if you get it wrong you end up with a bucket of bits like i did.  .

look for diesel under the bottom of the pump this may help you spot any leaks.
