Intermittent power loss

Hi all, having a problem with my 2.5td Freda which seems to be happening more often. Basically its randomly losing power, today for example I was overtaking a bus on the dual carrigeway just as i was getting to the front of the bus the power dropped right off. I slowed right down as it couldn't even hold the speed i was doing. Turned off the main road so i could stop as it was really struggling and when i did suddenly it was back to normal. Was doing this all the way home, one moment no power, the next fine. Its happened a few times over the last couple of weeks but its definitely getting more frequent. There are no warning lights on the dash or other symptoms, the only things i can think of are a fueling issue or turbo problem.

Any advice would be much appreciated

Thanks

Andy

I'd change the main fuel filter as well as removing and cleaning the banjo filter on the injector pump.

Thanks peeps, I think i have a spare fuel filter somewhere, will dig it out and get it changed tomorrow and give the banjo filter a clean at the same time.

May want to make sure the tank breather is open as well so your not creating a vacuum.

there is a fuel filter inside the tank too on the pick up pipe, remove the rubber pipe on the fuel filter housing and give it a real good blow til your dizzy.

Well was out and about this morning and the van had no power at all, wasn't coming and going like before. This afternoon I changed the fuel filter, cleaned the banjo filter and blew through the pipe, unfortunately its still the same :(

Not sure what to check next :?

have you checked the connections to the battery, both positive and neg especially to the body. there are also the engine/gearbox earth straps to the body.

While you are at it, check the main turbo pipe hasn't worked it's way loose.

Just an update, checked the battery connections and turbo piping and all looked fine, certainly nothing loose or disconnected. I have noticed that if I turn the engine off and back on again its fine when i pull away until i either lift off and put the power back on again or it changes up a gear then nothing. Hopefully get my car back on the road tomorrow as i don't like driving it when its not right and maybe give her another once over at the weekend.

Thanks all for your suggestions so far, tis much appreciated

stand at the drivers door engine not running and see if the underside of the injector pump is wet with fuel. then start the engine, rev it and watch for fuel dripping as you come off the throttle, rev it, let it drop, rev it etc.

Well checked everything I can think of and all your suggestions and can't see anything thats not right. This has got me stumped, may have to admit defeat and let the garage have a look see if they can figure it out :(
