Bongo Fury

The temperature guage on my 2002 2L tin top Bongo has never worked. I have had new sensors fitted but it stays frustratingly on C and doesn't move. I have just discovered that although there is no movement when the engine is running, if I turn off the engine and then turn on the ignistion the pointer moves to the 11 o'clock position. If I then turn on the engine it moves immediately back to C. Any ideas?

Nothing obvious comes to mind! So start with checking the sensor and then move to the dashboard display as they are the only two parts involved!

Has it ever had a Mason alarm fitted or has the gauge been mod'ed at some point? When I fitted Mason alarm on my last Bongo, I tightened the screw on the rear of gauge a bit too much which caused the threaded brass post to rotate which then snapped the wire to one of the coils. The effect was that only one of the coils was energised so the needle went straight to H as soon as the ignition was on. Perhaps similar thing has happened to yours. Maybe a previous owner has tried to disguise this by taking the needle off and resetting it to C with the ignition on.

Personally, I would not rely exclusively on an aftermarket unit. While they are useful to supplement the standard gauge they are not immune from problems. A few years back, Haydn had a trial batch of a very similar unit and I was one of the guinea pigs. It worked fine for a while and then would display the same reading regardless of the actual temperature. Other people experienced similar issues (something like a 50% failure rate) and in the end they were either returned or sold off for charity.

The only temp gauges we have had any problems with are the same as or similar to the one mentioned above.
The TM series of gauges which we have always stocked and are built to a very high spec with quality components have had a Zero failure to date. Only reported problems have been damaged sensor cables and the gauges tell you when this happens.
Do not confuse the above gauges with ours.....'yer pays yer money' !!

Thanks Haydn - yes I'd second that. I've got TM2 & TM4 (as well as a Cube alarm) & they've all been faultless. The one in my photo was trialled as being a potential lower cost alternative to the above but was not up to the required standards and that's why that model was never pursued.
