I've not had any luck when family visit from there, may have to resort to a hire car.

For 7 days try http://www.dayinsure.co.uk

https://www.dayinsure.com/quote/secure/motorhome

You may need to contact them direct as they do not list Canada.

Is it worth contacting Canadian embassy as I'm sure this scenario will have come up in the past?

Hi
If UK Embassies are anything to go by, good luck !!!!!...They only deal with severe emergencies, and are usually manned by locals to save money. I do hear that isn't the case with other countries Embassies , though.
I just don't see why Canada gets the bum's rush when it comes to the UK...a once highly valued ally has been turfed out into the cold by the UK...You can't get a pension paid there and index-linked..BUT you can in America and Jamaica...the list goes on!
So...your best bet is to try and hire from a specialist company, and forget driving your friend's Bongo...
I hope you manage to find something suitable, and have a good trip!
Cheers
Helen
