Any tips on negotiating a better deal on AA renewal?
Been meaning to have a go at haggling over the renewal cost for a number of years, but the latest one is about £190 which is now taking the mick. Have been with them for something like 19 years and not needed to call on their services for the last 15 years so would have been nice if maybe for once I could knock a few pounds off.
Anyone got any tips or advice on how to approach this? I know I could probably find similar cover cheaper with Green Flag etc although I'm otherwise happy with the AA.

hello,
Put me through to cancellations please. Im not paying this renewal price.
Certainly Sir, any reason why
I can get it same cover from green flag (insert suitable breakdown company disclaimer)
and its £ 124 for the year.
Ok Sir, we will match this.
Sorted

What's included in your £190
I pay a total of £200
And that is with break down repair cover ( 5 x £500 repair costs of breakdown ) at a garage of my choice
and road side relay
Same as you been with them years am now a gold card member ( wooooo )
Roadside is about £90 and repair cover the rest

I will bet that they are happier with you , phone them and cancel your cover. Then negotiate.

Or Try the RAC. I pay around £145 for EU wide cover for me in any vehicle.

As said, haggle. Knocked off £110 this year. "Gold member" blah blah, "I can't afford anything like that, etc etc.."

Hi,
I've just told them to stick their membership for exactly the same reason. Maybe I am being cynical, but their rates do seem to vary depending on what they think you are worth - or possibly how gullible they think you are.

I've got Gold membership (which in reality means diddly) but every year they do the same to me. I never pay more than I can get it as a new member online. This years renewal was £138. Online price £99 (without gold "advantages"). Paid £99 and kept the advantages which is only fair.

The horrors tried to put my cover up from £13 a month to £31 for the same level of cover. I knocked them down to £20 but am thinking of moving to Rac. Need to decide soon as cover up in May.

Still think they are the best.
In Scotland alternator went. AA came out it was a Sunday, man said did not want to ruin holiday so rang round breakers and sourced a replacement. Put a good battery on bongo and I followed him for 30 min to breakers where he fitted replacement alternator.
Not sure if many other recovery services would have done that.

Re: Any tips on negotiating a better deal on AA renewal?
A quick update. I spoke to AA today and had a very useful chat with one of their guys and he was able to offer me the same deal they were offering to new customers which is 12 months for the price of 9 which brings it down from £197 to about £141 while leaving in place all the benefits of the gold membership. This is comparable to similar package from the RAC so I'm happy I've got the level of cover I wanted for a price I was prepared to pay.
No major haggling required either: just told him I was thinking of leaving as it no longer offered good value for money. Next job, tackle the gas and electric supplier .
